For four years I worked on F-15s as a field engineer
for Hughes Aircraft. I spent countless hours with pilots reviewing its tactical
performance in training missions, helping flightline troops troubleshoot
their more difficult problems, and tracking spare parts problems. I had an
overall picture of the worth of that jet that few people even in the Air
Force were privy to. I had also worked on other jet fighters to form a good
comparison. So I was very interested when a news show was going to dedicate
15 minutes to this jet.
I went to a friend's house to watch the show. I was entertained throughout. However, when the segment was over I was amazed. Almost every fact that was reported about the F-15 was correct, but the overall impression of the performance and maintainability of the aircraft was the complete opposite of what I knew to be true. This was possible because the producers only selected the most sensational facts to present.
Would you like to know what a previous editor of the New York Times feels about our free press?
In 1969 the New York Times published an apology for once printing derisive comments about an inventor's theory. Robert Goddard was on the receiving end of the Time's criticism of his contention that rockets could operate in outer space. The apology was printed the day after Apollo 11 left earth orbit for the moon. "Professor Goddard ... does not know the relation of action to reaction ... he only seems to lack the knowledge ladled out daily in our high schools" [New York Times, January 13, 1920]
In another example of inaccurate journalism, scientist Paul LaViolette makes counterpoints to what has unfortunately passed as journalism regarding his work.
Literary journalism? an article on this huge oxymoron.
One reporter's view on the journalistic process and the resultant accuracy.
A report on the accuracy of a GQ article regarding cattle mutilations. Who has an agenda that requires distorting the facts about cattle mutilations? There is only one theory so far put forward: By creating this distortion, the GQ writer makes the article agreeable to more readers.
Sometimes the truth gets printed and it is a real shocker.
Books
are better sources of information than any media I have found. However,
information on obscure subjects is difficult for a publisher to verify. Now,
the web offers a little used tool to test the validity of the information
in a book, or does it? Amazon dot com offers potential readers the ability
to read reviews by other readers. People who take the time to make comments
on a book usually qualify their opinions. By reading these reviews you can
finally tell if you are about to receive some accurate information or
can you? I am not recommending the book Voices of the First Day, but click
the book to the left and go down to All Customer Reviews. You will find an
amazing divergence of opinions about this book. Perhaps reading books is
not the key to knowledge.

California State Senate
The
Internet may be the best tool to find out what is really going on. To
learn what the federal government is up to, go to
Thomas (as in Jefferson).
Most stats in USA have a web site where you can learn how your freedom is holding up and how you tax money is going down (the drain). In California it is here. Looking for info on your state?
If any body has an idea regarding what is really going on in the rest of the world, I'd love to find a way. Email me: Paul Winter
