The Journey

This story encourages you to examine yourself and see if you can make one important decision that can guide you through the rest of your life.

Imagine that you are about to start a long, journey. This journey will take years and be full of difficult decisions with life changing outcomes. You know very little about this journey, but through long deliberation you decided that the purpose of the journey is to move yourself towards enlightenment. You have a bit of a disadvantage regarding this journey: you have amnesia. There is a possibility that you took this journey many time before. It would be very hard to learn the details of the previous journeys, but you can make fairly accurate assumptions about their general course of events.

As you consider the journey, you realize:

If you had taken the journey before, this is probably the first opportunity to take unique paths that were previously closed to you.
Takings different paths enriches your character which moves a person towards the purpose of the journey.
Taking the same basic paths over and over again is not likely to improve you character very much.

The reason that it is important to know if you have taken this journey before has to do with taking unique paths. If you take the usual paths, you will have a similar journey to the journeys you have taken in the past and not enrich your character very much. Taking the usual paths is often lost opportunity. It takes courage to take the unusual paths, but that courage can come from the fact that you will get another chance, that this journey isn't all that important. It is just one out of many.

There is a method for learning if you have taken this journey numerous times before. It takes several hours, but you can do it at night during the start of the journey and it requires no physical effort. Finding out this one simple fact about yourself will effect most important decicions in your life. Will you do it? If you are like most people, you will not.

That journey is of course, your life. The opportunity to take paths that were previously closed to you are the opportunities of our modern world such as increased leisure time, increased educational opportunity, birth control, increased freedom, increased ability for individual financial independence.

Taking the same basic paths over and over again will not enrich your soul, but it will satisfy the animal desires and make you feel safe. This story was written as an appeal to rise up and do something better with your life. If it is children that you love then challenge that love; work with kids that are in need now. Make a difference not another 2.3 people.

The method for determining if you have had this journey before is reading one book that promotes the concept of reincarnation and one book that opposes reincarnation. Then, courageously base your life decisions on the theory that seems right to you.

The paths that are different can be opened to you by avoiding life styles that you most likely lead previously. If you decide that such was the case, your previous character building experiences were most likely centered around child rearing. On a planet where there are three times too many people (six billion at last count), electing to take a different path, not only expands your character, but is most benevolent to the environment and to society.
